Lady Macbeth’s Super(natural) Netflix Recommendations

This is Lady Macbeth's list of recommended Netflix shows, found in her diary, that she recommends to all interested in the supernatural.

1) Stranger Things – This Netflix original series has become very popular and has even caught the attention of Lady Macbeth. It is about a group of 4 who discover secret experiments, supernatural forces and a strange little girl with telekinesis. Their adventures in a small fictional town are scary and include one of the boys mysteriously vanishing. Lady Macbeth would recommend this show because she has a fascination with the supernatural (the witches’ prophecy) and this show is all about that. She would also like to be similar to the main character, named Eleven who is a strong female lead and has telekinetic powers. Eleven is the more powerful one in her relationship with Mike, another main character in the show. Lady Macbeth would enjoy watching that type of relationship since she has an almost identical one with her husband. Lady Macbeth just finished watching season 2 and is impatiently waiting for the upcoming third season.

2) Teen Wolf – This 6 year long television drama is also a show that Lady Macbeth recommends. It stars 4 teenagers with supernatural abilities. One of the boys, Scott McCall, has been bitten by an alpha werewolf and has turned into one himself. His best friend, Stiles, helps the group solve the supernatural mysteries and murders in their town while providing some sarcastic comedic relief. Lady Macbeth would see this duo as representing her husband and Banquo, respectively. Another character, Malia, is a were-coyote with great strength and intellect. Lady Macbeth loves watching her succeed because Malia is the dominant one in her relationship with Stiles. Lady Macbeth loves to see strong independent female protagonists and is sad that the series has ended.

3) Arrow – This is an American superhero television series based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow. The series follows billionaire playboy Oliver Queen, who after being stranded on a hostile island for 5 years, returns home to fight crime and corruption as a secret vigilante whose weapon of choice is a bow and arrow. Lady Macbeth has enjoyed all 6 seasons of this dark series because she likes to imagine that the best version of Macbeth would be like Oliver and have the power and confidence to kill. This show also features a lot of the supernatural elements with metahumans, light magic, and resurrection. Lady Macbeth secretly wishes that she had the same masculine characteristics as Oliver like she said in her ‘unsex me’ scene in the play. She also finds him very attractive and the perfect male hero figure. The plot continues to be more dark and twisted, but Lady Macbeth is thrilled for the rest of the 6th season to return in January.

4) Black Mirror – Black Mirror is a science fiction anthology television series that centers on dark and satirical themes. It was inspired by classic shows like The Twilight Zone, which dealt with controversial and contemporary topics. Episodes are standalone works, usually set in an alternative present day or the near future. Lady Macbeth often wishes that certain events in her life with Macbeth had a different outcome such as when he freaked out at the banquet when he supposedly saw Banquo’s ghost. She is also not bored with this series since it constantly gives thought-provoking ideas has a lot of action. Every episode features a new plot and characters and she gets into it by analyzing all the information and then making her own conclusions. Her favorite episode was San Junipero which had a more hopeful tone set and is in a 1987 beach resort town named San Junipero. The town is revealed to be a simulated reality where the elderly and deceased live in peace and harmony. It won two Primetime Emmy Awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie. Lady Macbeth might, after watching this episode, want to die so she can permanently inhabit this place that is so much better than her current situation. (maybe this is why Lady Macbeth killed herself…?)

  1. Wow Alex, great blog post as usual. I really liked how you liked the T.V. shows to Lady Macbeth, and what I liked most was your Arrow review, and I thought that was really creative. I like how you compared Oliver to Macbeth, and also found it neat when you compared Malia to Lady Macbeth based on their similarities with power in their relationships. Unfortunately, I have not seen any of these shows yet, but after reading these reviews I look forward to starting them shortly.

  2. How creative, I really liked how you used such untraditional shows for Lady Macbeth. I thought your Teen Wolf comparison was especially interesting, with the involvement of the supernatural and female protagonists. In addition, since werewolves came about as a part of an Old English tale, it probably would have been ingrained in English "bedtime stories". A strong female lead would also be preferable, as Lady Macbeth is not one to be bossed around by her husband. Overall, great post! Merry Christmas Alex, give Pebbles lots of tiny hugs for me!

  3. Great blog, I like how you used shows that you were very familiar with. Throughout each explanation it was clear that you had watched these shows. The use of specific references and examples brought something special to your blog.
